Easter is a celebration in honor of the resurrection of Lord Jesus. People celebrate Easter according to their beliefs and their religious denominations. Christians commemorate Good Friday as the day that Jesus Christ died and Easter Sunday as the day that He was resurrected. The word "Easter" is named after Easter, the Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring.
It is a festivity in which the people enjoy in a great way, the celebration begins very early in the morning, some candles are lit by people, men and women dressed up in their special Easter clothes go to the church and offer prayers. Houses are decorated with beautiful lilies. Lilies are said to have been found growing in the Garden of Gethsemane after Christ's agony, where drops of Christ's sweat fell to the ground in his final hours of sorrow and deep distress. At Easter time, Churches bank their altars and surround their crosses with masses of Easter Lilies, to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ and hope of everlasting life everlasting.
Other important tradition is the Easter Bunny, the Hare and the Rabbit were the most fertile animals known and they served as symbols of the new life during the spring season. The first edible Easter bunnies were made in Germany; these were made of pastry and sugar.
Legend tells when Mary Magdalena went to sepulcher to anoint the body of Jesus. She carried a basket of eggs to serve as a repast. When she arrived at the sepulcher and uncovered the eggs the shells had miraculously taken on a rainbow of colors. Decorating and coloring eggs for Easter was the custom in England during the middle Ages.
The traditions are beautiful in all the cultures of the world, here in Costa Rica, our more important religious celebration is the holy week, but we give very different meaning to the used symbols, in relation to what the American culture uses.
